As a child, I loved the story, ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett but probably more because of the thrill of the mysteries it contained than because of its reference to gardening. Recently it occurred to me to make contact with the book again and I did so by downloading the audiobook from the Librivox* site.
I then spent many a happy night being lulled to sleep by Kara Shallenberg’s rendering of the story. As I got deeper into the book, it slowly dawned on me that this was something rather more than a children’s book and, in fact, may never have been written with children in mind at all. I don’t want to spoil the surprise in case you decide to download it or get hold of a copy for yourself, but suffice it to say that if Ms Burnett were alive today, she wouldn’t seem out of place writing for Green & Growing…
